“The Islamic Endowments Authority [1] in occupied Jerusalem announced that approximately 250,000 Palestinians attended the third Friday prayer in Ramadan, despite the measures taken by the Occupation to prevent the entry of thousands of Palestinians from the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

From the early hours of Friday morning, thousands of Palestinians from [Jerusalem], from the lands occupied in 1948, and from the occupied West Bank, gathered in the Old City of occupied Jerusalem and in the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Some of these people were given authorisation from the Occupation to enter the city.

Occupation forces chased hundreds of Palestinians who tried to enter the city by the army checkpoints near Ramallah and Bethlehem as only women and men over the age of forty were allowed to enter.”

[1] The Islamic Endowments Authority is also known as the Waqf. The Jerusalem Islamic Waqf, essentially functions as the religious and civil administration of the Haram Al-Sharif. Since 1187, following Salah a-Din’s final conquest over Christian forces in the Crusader wars, some sort of Waqf has governed the Haram Al-Sharif, the most recent of which was established immediately after the 1948 war by Jordan. Following the 1967 war in which Israel took control the Old City of Jerusalem, the Israeli government decided to maintain Jordanian custodianship of the Waqf. Today, the Haram al-Sharif is governed and funded jointly by the Jordanian Waqf and the Waqf of the Palestinian Authority.
