“A video recorded by an Israeli activist of children playing soccer inside the courtyards of Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound has been circulating on many Israeli websites.

A number of settler activists have waged a vicious campaign of incitement against these children. They aski Occupation police officers stationed in the courtyards to prevent the children from playing, claiming that this [Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound] is a holy site for Jews and its sanctity must be preserved.

Many settler activists have been circulating the video accompanied by inflammatory commentary claiming that this is an illegal activity, which happens daily inside the courtyards of the mosque while the Occupation police do nothing to prevent it.

In addition, Israeli news sources revealed that Occupation police leaders had issued orders to officers stationed in the courtyards of Al-Aqsa to prevent [Palestinian] Jerusalemite children from playing inside the courtyards. The orders were issued after a petition was filed by Jewish organizations arguing that Muslim children should be prevented from playing in the areas around the mosque.”

0202 Editor’s Note:
Since 1967, Jordan and Israel agreed that the Waqf, or the Islamic trust, would have control over matters inside Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, while Israel would control external security. Non-Muslims would be allowed onto the site during visiting hours, but would not be allowed to pray there. This agreement is what is referred to as the 'status quo'.
However, in recent years, Jewish movements who advocate for the right of Jews to ascend to Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound have challenged the Israeli government's ban on allowing Jews to enter the compound. Today, Israeli forces routinely allow Jewish groups to enter the Al-Aqsa Compound under police and army protection, stirring Palestinian fears of an Israeli takeover of the compound.
