"Singer Aharon Razel, in spite of the law [1], will give a performance where the audience will be separated into male and female sections. After the ‘masking tape’ performance of Yonatan Razel [2], his brother Aharon is now at the center of a public dispute over women’s equality and rights. Surprisingly, it is the ‘Garin Torani’ community [3] of Neve Yaakov that are protesting against the segregated performance intended to take place at the community center this Hannukah. The community states that because the performance is publicly funded, it cannot be divided by gender. 0202 Editor’s notes:
[1] Publicly funded events are forbidden to be segregated by gender. This is as opposed to synagogues that conduct ‘private’ services and thus are allowed to separate (curtain/wall) between men and women.
[2] The incident referred to is when ultra-orthodox singer Yonatan Razel covered his eyes with masking tape in the middle of a concert for women in order not to see audience members who were dancing in front of the stage. This was in accordance with some Jewish Orthodox legal opinions which consider it inappropriate for men to see women dancing. This often presents a problem for religious musicians, at whose performances women dance enthusiastically. Most such musicians simply avert their eyes, but Razel appears to have opted for a more radical solution. To read an 0202 digest on the varying reactions to this incident see: https://goo.gl/6zGxNA.
[3] Garin Torani: a group of idealistic, religious Zionists, individuals and families, who settle in underdeveloped communities to help build up and strengthen the community through social and religious programming.
